[Letter] 1876 Dec. 11, Mansfield, La. to Bro. [John A.] Broadus / T.W. Elbeltoft. 1876.

Sends Broadus the details of his trials as a young pastor. "The Methodists here are predominant. They use their college-- i.e. the girls-- as an instrument and even use other means to increase their congregations and church-membership." In his church he had "to contend with something more serious still, viz. apathy ..." Despite his troubles, he liked the church. "The people at large have respected my position, and perhaps, if I did not know it is because of my position, might tend to spoil me." He concluded that he was "here, it may be for life."
